Earlier today, it seemed the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals were discussing plans to trade David Freese to the Yankees, but now that may not be the case. According to a tweet from Ken Rosenthal, the Yankees and Cardinals are now unlikely to work out a trade involving the 30-year old former World Series MVP winner.
The Cardinals claim the Yankees simply have little to offer for Freese. However, just because the Yankees lucked out again on trading for Freese, doesn’t mean the Freese saga is over. Freese could make up to $4.5 Million during arbitration, but it’s slightly possible the Cardinals would non-tender Freese and make him a free agent.
This isn’t the first time that Freese has been linked to the Yankees and I’m pretty sure it won’t be the last–but the Yankees having too little in the farm system to make the trade work might have shined a light on the minor league depth situation.
