Merry Christmas! Let the ‘Tanaka Sweepstakes’ begin!

Masahiro Tanaka 5

First off on behalf of Bronx Baseball Daily, we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday. Spend time with your family, your friends and if you’re a baseball fan, take out your calendar and mark off another major holiday because we’re one official holiday closer to Spring Training.

Now, since it’s Christmas, here’s a gift for you guys: Masahiro Tanaka chose an agent and the rules have been set for the Tanaka sweepstakes.

Tanaka had chosen Casey Close to be his agent according to Japanese news site Sponchi. If Close’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he is also the agent of Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.

Now here’s the outline of how the posting will go:

— Tanaka will be posted on Thursday morning and the posting process will be completed on January 24th at 5:00 p.m.

— All 30 Major League teams can start bidding ¬†tomorrow morning in order to talk to Tanaka. According to an MLB spokesperson, the team does not have to place a formal bid of $20 Million but will just have to be willing to pay $20 Million to the Golden Eagles if the team signs Tanaka.

— Tanaka will then have to choose a team and will have 30 days to negotiate with them.

— Only the team that signs Tanaka will have to pay the Rakuten Golden Eagles the $20 Million posting fee.

Now that Tanaka will be posted, all we can do is sit back, wait and hope that in the end, it’s the Yankees that win the Tanaka sweepstakes. Everyone knows the Yankees could use a Christmas miracle right now.

  1. Yankees fan says:

Yankees better go all out they need a better pitcher to add to the rotation

  2. Jasper says:

Even if Tanaka can hold a spot on the backend of a MLB rotation the Yankees still don't have a rotation anywhere near as reliable or as deep as Tampa or Boston and would be on par with Toronto.

Forget Tanaka and sign two or more proven guys.

  3. Michael R says:

I agree with Jasper. Save the money and get two players.

  4. Yankees fan says:

That is another good point Jasper if they would sign perhaps Johan Santana and A.J. Burnett or even try trading for Cole Hamels and/ or Cliff Lee they could get decent players that they know can do decent. What happens if Tanaka is a big bust on a huge contract and gets suspended or gets hurt a lot like A Rod not saying he is very bad last year he had a few good games but if the Yankees are going to thrive they need rotation help and A Rod and Derek Jetter to be healthy and play well for a shot at the WS.

    • mlblogsnewyorkyankees13 says:

No to Johan Santana. Santana has too much baggage injury-wise and the last thing the Yankees need is a pitcher that ends up on the disabled list five times a year. The A.J Burnett experiment didn't work the first time. i like A.J, I do but there's no way I'd sign him to play for the Yankees again. As for Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels, who are the Yankees going to give for them? Brett Gardner surely isn't enough and Yankees have no one in the minor league system to offer.

  5. tom says:

Save money for another 2 pitchers? I don't think so. Tanaka probably is good for 15-16m AAV. Name two pitchers that will fit under 15m?

Once Yankees get Tanaka, Yankees have two SPs in the fold for next 4 years. Skipping him and signing two pitchers will not help us in long plan as you pray hard that Pineda, Nova, few kids are fully ready to roll during 5 year plan.

20m going oversea is a bittersweet but it is a lot of cheaper than the old method as Yankees are fixed in obtaining Tanaka.

    • oldranger7 says:

      Very well put Tom…
The signing of Tank will go a long way helping the team move to the Play-offs and WS. Pitchers 33+ are not going to want less than a 3 year contract at good money. Tank will help us more in the long run, he is young and knows how to pitch…now, can he work every 5 days?

    • Yankees fan says:

AJ Burnett Tommy Hanson Oliver Perez Jake Westbrook Scott Baker Louis Ayala Jeff Karstens and Dan Harden. They would save money geting two cheaper pitchers not saving money for two cheaper pitchers.

  6. Isla says:

Tanaka will make a big different, not only on the field but also on the NYY TV money box. NYY will have in their roster 3 Japanese players ( Kuroda, Tanaka and Ichiro) this mean at least two weekly tops possible TV transmissions from USA to Japan.

  7. Yankees fan says:

What if the would get Tanaka and have just enough left for a older cheaply priced pitcher like Roy Oswalt he realy doesn't have a market so he would be a cheap pick up and then get 1b Mark Reynolds and call it an off season.

  8. Yankees fan says:

If AJ Burnett and Johan Santana won't work than would Bronson Arroyo and Matt Garza work? Yes but they would be more expensive and if they can't trade for Cliff Lee and/ or Cole Hamels how about David Price?
