First off on behalf of Bronx Baseball Daily, we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday. Spend time with your family, your friends and if you’re a baseball fan, take out your calendar and mark off another major holiday because we’re one official holiday closer to Spring Training.
Now, since it’s Christmas, here’s a gift for you guys: Masahiro Tanaka chose an agent and the rules have been set for the Tanaka sweepstakes.
Tanaka had chosen Casey Close to be his agent according to Japanese news site Sponchi. If Close’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he is also the agent of Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.
Now here’s the outline of how the posting will go:
— Tanaka will be posted on Thursday morning and the posting process will be completed on January 24th at 5:00 p.m.
— All 30 Major League teams can start bidding tomorrow morning in order to talk to Tanaka. According to an MLB spokesperson, the team does not have to place a formal bid of $20 Million but will just have to be willing to pay $20 Million to the Golden Eagles if the team signs Tanaka.
— Tanaka will then have to choose a team and will have 30 days to negotiate with them.
— Only the team that signs Tanaka will have to pay the Rakuten Golden Eagles the $20 Million posting fee.
Now that Tanaka will be posted, all we can do is sit back, wait and hope that in the end, it’s the Yankees that win the Tanaka sweepstakes. Everyone knows the Yankees could use a Christmas miracle right now.
