Report: Yankees interested in Grant Balfour

Grant Balfour

After Grant Balfour‘s deal with the Baltimore Orioles fell through, Balfour said on a radio show that about “three or four teams” were interested in him, with one even making an offer. It looks as if the Yankees were one of those teams.

According to MLBTradeRumors, the Yankees are interested in signing Grant Balfour, who has 9th inning experience. Let’s not forget that the Yankees have David Robertson who could take over the closing role for Mariano Rivera, but the organization doesn’t feel that Robertson has enough experience for the closing position. Robertson said in a previous interview that he would like the role, but he would be the 8th inning man again if it’s what the team would prefer.

Balfor, who turns 36 next week, had a 2.59 ERA with 10.3 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 while also getting his first career All-Star selection in 2013.

If Yanks could sign Balfour to close and keep Robertson for 8th and with the addition of lefty Matt Thornton the bull-pen now becomes a real strength!

I would offer Grant Balfour the same deal the O's offered 2years/$15 mm .

  3. Candygirl1221 says:

Robertson throws TOO MANY pitches to be a dependable closure. His ability to actually accurately close a game two days in a row seems nil. The Yankees need to grab a known closer or too many games will be LOST!!! 30+ pitches in 1 inning are at least 20 too many!!!

Grant would be a good pick up but what about Carlos Marmol he could fit but Grant is much better David Robertson is only good for closing 10 games he throws way to much like candygirl1221 said I agree with that person

Not so fast, guys. He failed his physical with the O's for a reason. Durability is essential for a closer. They tend to hide arm problems until they get blasted enough times and can't deny it any longer.

But he went to two other doctors after that and they both said they saw nothing wrong with his MRI. And this isn't the first time the O's have done something like this. This is the third time this is happened. It's not a coincidence now. Something's wrong in the O's front office.

  6. Yankees fan says:

Who would they go after then. I know ther is not another good closer exsept Carlos Marmol and they could get him cheaper but just because Grant failed the O's test doesn't mean he would fail the Yankees. Even two doctors agreed he was healthy.
