Day one of the Winter Meetings is drawing to a close and the Yankee that attracted the most interest was (no surprise), Brett Gardner. There have been some rumblings about Gardner, but nothing significant. Here’s some of the news from today.
— Rival executives believe the most Brett Gardner can bring back via trade is a #4 starter. So to put it in perspective, if the Yankees were to hypothetically trade Gardner to the Minnesota Twins…he’d bring back Phil Hughes.
— The San Francisco Giants have shown interest in Gardner according to Joel Sherman, but a trade might not happen. Sherman says the trade is not impossible, but also is unlikely.
— In an interview, Brian Cashman stated that trading Gardner seemed unlikely and spoke very highly of his home grown outfielder
“It would be hard pressed to move a guy like Gardner there’s no doubt about that. He’s really a tremendous player.” Cashman said. “We could only move him if we were going to somehow make ourselves better & that’s hard to do. We envision Gardner & Ellsbury manning the OF with Beltran & Soriano used in the DH sport & everyone else assisting.”
— And the surprise player to pop up into a conversation about the Yankees is…Boone Logan. According to multiple sources, the Yankees have kept in contact with Boone Logan, showing slight interest in having Logan return. With the bullpen market slightly thin, bringing Logan back wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world.
