Although the Yankees lost to the Pirates, the defeat was overshadowed by the return of Yankees captain Derek Jeter, as he played five innings at shortstop for the first time since September of last season.
Although Jeter went 0-for-2, it was still refreshing to see Jeter back in his rightful position, even if it’s only for one last season. Jeter showed no signs of favoring the ankle, which is a good sign since the Yankees expect him to be the 2014 Opening Day shortstop.
David Phelps started for the Yankees, giving up one run in two innings of work. Phelps also struck out four to complete his day. Brett Gardner had an infield single and a walk, Kelly Johnson had an RBI double and John Ryan Murphy, who is contending for the backup catching position, had an RBI as well.
— Carlos Beltran, Jacoby Ellsbury and Brian McCann will make the trip to Lakeland to face Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers. Adam Warren is the starting pitcher of that game and the first game will be at 1:05 p.m. The game will not be on television, but it will be on Detroit Tigers radio.
