Brendan Ryan likely to start season on the DL

Brendan Ryan 2

Brendan Ryan hasn’t played in a Spring Training game since March 4th due to a back injury and although he was feeling better before last nights game, another back injury flared up which led to Ryan ¬†going through the famous MRI tube. The MRI readings showed a pinched nerve in his back, most likely meaning Ryan will start the season on the disabled list.

Brian Cashman hasn’t ruled out Opening Day, but Brendan Ryan isn’t as optimistic. With Ryan shelved, it now seems there’s another competition this Spring; the competition to be the temporary backup shortstop. It appears Dean Anna might be the front runner since he’s the only one on the 40-man roster, but Joe Girardi hasn’t ruled out Yangervis Solarte (who has opened a lot of eyes in camp). The Yankees have 10 days to find a replacement if Ryan isn’t ready, and the competition starts now.

Some Notes

— David Robertson will pitch the 9th inning today for the Yankees and Shawn Kelley will pitch the 8th. It would be the first time the Yankees used Robertson and Kelly in late innings this Spring. It looks as if Joe Girardi is setting up for Shawn Kelley to be the set-up man, a role previously occupied by Robertson. Matt Thornton and David Herndon are also scheduled to pitch in relief.

— Russ Canzler is slated to get into the game later this evening to relieve Mark Teixeira. It will be the first time Canzler has been in a game since last week after injuring his hip by crashing into the outfield wall.

— Ivan Nova will throw a minor league game on Monday (which is the Yankees last off-day of the Spring).

— Adam Warren and Vidal Nuno each pitched six innings in minor league camp yesterday. The Yankees plan on stretching out Warren and Nuno just in case an injury occurs. If there are no injuries the Yankees will ultimately choose one (or both) of them to go into the Yankees bullpen.

— Jacoby Ellsbury wasn’t listed on the batting practice sheet, but he was on the field taking batting practice. It was a small clerical error on Rob Thomson’s part; he forgot to add Ellsbury’s name to the list. Ellsbury is slated to get into a game either Sunday or Tuesday although Tuesday seems more realistic.
