CC Sabathia tried and succeeded to build on his last outing, pitching seven shut out innings as the Yankees defeated the Pirates 4-0 at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Sabathia gave up four hits, struck out seven and only walked one in his second consecutive brilliant outing and his fastball showed signs of promise, topping out at 91 MPH.
The Yankees had four runs on five hits against Pirates starter Edison Volquez, including a RBI double by Brian McCann in the first and a wild pitch scoring Mark Teixeira following afterwards. Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter made productive ground outs against Volquez, bringing in the final two runs of the game.
Matt Thornton relieved Sabathia in the eighth, retiring both batters he faced while Shawn Kelley followed, retiring the only man he faced. David Robertson pitched a 1, 2, 3 9th to end the ball game. It was the first time this Spring Robertson entered a game in the 9th inning.
