Girardi: Michael Pineda is the fifth starter

The fifth starter competition is over!

Joe Girardi has officially announced Michael Pineda will be the fifth starter in the Yankees rotation and David Phelps along with Adam Warren will move to the Yankees bullpen. Phelps was scheduled to be the starter for tonight’s game but was switched with Warren, who will be the long man. Phelps’s role in the pen has yet to be determined.

Girardi knew Pineda had a shot to make the rotation in mid-February when he witnessed his bullpens and Pineda’s 15 innings of work while giving up two earned runs this Spring furthered his case. Pineda joins CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, Ivan Nova and Masahiro Tanaka as the Yankees starters for the 2014 season.

I’ll have more notes and quotes in the next blog post about Pineda along with news around Yankees camp.

One Response to Girardi: Michael Pineda is the fifth starter

  1. I like this. Even though I'm still a fan of Phelps, he'll get his chance eventually. Pineda has the most potential if he can put the shoulder injury behind him. The Yankees need to find out if he can handle the job physically and there is only one way to do that and it's to let him pitch. I'm tired of watching them baby pitchers. It got them no where with Joba and Hughes.
