Michael Pineda to make Spring debut tonight

Michael Pineda

Ladies and gentlemen…the wait is over.

Michael Pineda will make his Spring appearance against the Tigers tonight, as he tries to win the competition to be the Yankees fifth starter. Hiroki Kuroda is starting tonight’s game and David Robertson will follow Kuroda; Pineda will pitch after Robertson. There has been some anticipation from Yankees fans as to when Pineda will get into a game, and now they’ll finally get a glimpse at a healthy Michael Pineda as he hopes to make a positive impact on the 2014 Yankees ball club.

Some Notes:

Alfonso Soriano and Ichiro Suzuki are both in the lineup but they switched outfield positions: Soriano is in right and Ichiro is in left. My guess is Joe Girardi is trying to get them to play everywhere so when the time comes, he can give Brett Gardner, Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran their respective days off.

Miguel Cabrera, Torii Hunter and Joba Chamberlain made the trip from Lakeland. No need to introduce the Yankees to Chamberlain…they’re well acquainted.

— Some sad news in Yankees Land as Yogi Berra lost his wife Carmen Berra to complications of a stroke. Carmen met Yogi in the late 1940’s when she was a waitress in a St. Louis restaraunt and he was a minor leaguer just returning from fighting in World War II. Carmen and Yogi married in 1949, recently celebrating their 65th anniversary in January. Carmen Berra was 85 years old.
