Nova, who had an up down Spring Training, went 6.1 innings allowing no runs on two hits and five strikeouts with the curveball being his go-to pitch. He only allowed hits to Andrelton Simmons in the third and Ryan Doumit in the sixth.
The Yankees jumped on the board early in the first inning when Brett Gardner walked, stole second and scored on a Carlos Beltran RBI single. Beltran had another RBI in the seventh inning off pitcher Luis Gonzalez.
Braves starter David Hale was able to retire the next nine consecutive hitters until a single by Brian Roberts and a Kelly Johnson walk allowed Adonis Garcia to hit a two-run double in the fourth inning. Beltran chased Hale from his start with a one-out single in the fifth inning.
Brian McCann made his return to Champion Stadium, where he played as a member of the Atlanta Braves. McCann went 0-for-4 in his return.
