Tanaka set to make his debut

Masahiro Tanaka 10

If there’s any game during Spring Training that should have you in front of the television at 1 p.m., this one is it. CC Sabathia is slated to make his Spring start for the Yankees after having a rough 2013 season–but he’s not the only one Yankees fans should look out for. Hiroki Kuroda and Masahiro Tanaka are slated to make their Spring debuts today as well.

Multiple players in the Yankees clubhouse had no clue Tanaka, Sabathia and Kuroda were slated to pitch today, then again the position players don’t pay close attention to what the pitchers are doing and vice versa.

Chase Whitley joked with the media, stating he wasn’t sure why there was so much media on a day he wasn’t scheduled to pitch. Well, Whitley’s not pitching, but all eyes will be on Tanaka as he adjusts to being in the Major Leagues. The game will be televised on the YES Network.

Some Notes:

Matt Thornton pitched in a simulated game this morning (so Michael Pineda really isn’t the only one throwing one). The pressure of pitching in a real game wasn’t there but it counts as his first spring appearance.

David Phelps and Jim Miller threw bullpens this morning. It’s a part of their regular in-between outing schedule.

Brian McCann is playing back to back days for the first time this Spring–but he’s the DH today while Francisco Cervelli is behind the plate. The Yankees have been showcasing all of their catchers (Gary Sanchez, Austin Romine, John Ryan Murphy, Francisco Cervelli) should the need for a trade arise.

Alfonso Soriano is scheduled to make the road-trip tomorrow, where he’ll make his Spring debut. He’ll join fellow OF Carlos Beltran and Jacoby Ellsbury in the lineup.

Here are the pitchers slated to get into today’s game:

1) CC Sabathia
2) Hiroki Kuroda
3) Masahiro Tanaka
4) Cesar Cabral
5) Dellin Betances
