Francisco Cervelli to go on the DL

Francisco Cervelli 5

When Francisco Cervelli came out of yesterday’s game with a hamstring issue, it didn’t look very good. The Yankees sent him to get an MRI and it looks like Cervelli will spend some time on the disabled list.

The Yankees announced Cervelli will go on the disabled list with a Grade 2 hamstring strain. They’ll make the corresponding move before tomorrow night’s game. The Yankees also announced they optioned Shane Greene to Triple AAA. The Yankees are expected to bring up a catcher and a position player.

For the catcher, it’s almost certain Austin Romine will be back. As for the position player, my bet is on Scott Sizemore. He has been hitting well in Triple AAA with a .344 average. If he hits like that in the majors, he could be a helpful addition to the ball club.

Some Notes

Brian McCann had precautionary X-Rays after yesterday’s game and they came back negative. McCann was hit in the hand during the eighth inning but stayed in the game following the injury to Cervelli. McCann considered it a non issue after the game, but the Yankees wanted to make sure.

Carlos Beltran was announced as the AL Player of the Week by Major League Baseball. In the span of a week, Beltran batted .423 (11-for-26) with four doubles, six RBI and seven runs scored. This is the tenth time Beltran had the honor oiverall, and the fourth time he was honored with the Player of the Week while in the American League. He last won it with the St. Louis Cardinals on May 14, 2012.

Hopefully Cervelli will be able to recover soon, he is a good player. I also look forward to see Austin Romine back in the game.

Actually, word is Murphy will be the callup.

  3. Though he didn't show it as a Sept. call-up last year, they like JR Murphy's bat plus he has at least a bit of experience at 3rd Base. One long-term plan had Brian Mc Cann taking over 1st Base when Teixeira's contract expires. Given Tex's inability to stay on the field, I'd expect Mc Cann & Scott Sizemore to start getting reps at 1st as emergency back-ups to Kelly Johnson. It's fairly common knowledge that Brian Cashman went to the mat to convince Randy Levine, Hank and Hal to sign Brian Roberts. Brian Roberts is seemingly going to be day to day for the remainder of his life. When is Cashman going to admit his mistake in judgement so the Yanks can have a 25 man roster like every other MLB team? If Roberts can't help them out tomorrow in either game I'd say his time is up.
