Nova has elbow injury in 16-1 loss to Rays

Ivan Nova 5

Just a day after the Yankees lost 11-5 to the Tampa Bay Rays, it didn’t seem possible that the next 24 hours could get any worse. Instead the Yankees fell 16-1 to the Rays and possibly lost Ivan Nova for a significant amount of time, with the Yankees falling in danger of losing another series.

Nova had statistically his worst start of his career, giving up a career high four home runs, including two to the number nine hitter Ryan Hanigan. Nova later left the game in the fifth inning with right elbow soreness. Joe Girardi told the media following the game Nova would get “diagnostic testing.” Matt Daley was summoned to pitch just a day after being called up from Scranton Wilkes-Barre, but he had an absurd outing himself. The game was so bizarre, the Yankees were forced to use Dean Anna as a pitcher in the eighth inning. If there was an award for who pitched the best…Dean Anna would win…and he’s technically not even a pitcher.

Following the game, the Yankees announced they were calling up Preston Claiborne and Bryan Mitchell for the Yankees pen. Expect more roster moves in the coming hours.

What’s Next?

Vidal Nuno will have pressure placed on him as the Yankees attempt to split the series against the Tampa Bay Rays. First pitch will be at 1:40 p.m. and the game will air on the YES Network.
