Yankees take first game of doubleheader with 4-3 win over Pirates

Brett Gardner 25

Coming into today’s game, the Yankees have had their luck with doubleheaders and their luck continued this afternoon. Four runs in the first two innings was just enough for the Yankees to take Game 1 with a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx New York.

The Yankees scored three runs in the first inning after trailing 1-0 on a Mark Teixeira two-run RBI single, scoring Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter. Brian McCann followed with a sharp ground ball, scoring Ellsbury before Alfonso Soriano struck out and Yangervis Solarte grounded into a double play. The Yankees scored one more in the second on a Brett Gardner RBI double, scoring Kelly Johnson.

Hiroki Kuroda wasn’t particularly sharp, but he was gritty, going six innings while giving up three runs on five hits and striking out seven. The Yankees bullpen was absolutely lights out, starting from Matt Daley, who got his two batters out, Matt Thornton, who retired his only batter, Adam Warren who got his two batters and David Robertson, who got the four out save and is now perfect in eight save attempts.
