Beltran activated from disabled list

Carlos Beltran had been on the disabled list since early May with a bone spur in his elbow. Today, Beltran came off the disabled list and will be the DH in the series finale against the Oakland Athletics. However, just because he’s back, doesn’t mean he doesn’t feel something in his elbow all the time.

“Sometimes,” he said when asked if he feels anything in his injured right elbow. “I feel good. I took, I don’t know how many at-bats (in Tampa) – maybe like 12, 14 at-bats – something like that. I swung from both sides of the plate. I swung hard – the same swing that I normally would take in a game. I didn’t feel nothing. But when they’re trying to do the treatments and trying to get me to get all of the range of motion, sometimes I feel something there. But it’s not pain. It’s just a hard stretch, but other than that, I feel fine.”

The Yankees are trying to prevent Beltran from needing in-season surgery, but having offseason surgery will ultimately be inevitable.

“This is something that I have to take treatment for, I would say, I don’t know,” he said. “Maybe for the rest of the season, because I have an issue there. It’s not like I don’t have nothing. It’s a loose piece there, but we’re hoping it doesn’t come back and I’m allowed to play the season.”

Some Notes

— To make room for Carlos Beltran on the disabled list, the Yankees designated Scott Sizemore for assignment. Now, before you think Sizemore is no longer on the ball club, think again. In Sizemore’s case, it’s an optional assignment waiver, meaning he’s just being sent back down to Triple-A. Gee, baseball sure is confusing sometimes, isn’t it?

Brian McCann is batting seventh today, but Joe Girardi said it’s because there’s a left hander on the mound. Now, I don’t know about you, but I know the Yankees did not pay McCann all that money just so he can hit low in the order.

Masahiro Tanaka will take the mound today and he’ll try to give the Yankees a victory. The Yankees need Tanaka to give them a good outing and the Yankees need to win. There’s no other way around it.
