CC Sabathia had his first rehab start this evening with the Tampa Yankees and for his first rehab start, he did pretty well; he went 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out two. According to a scout, Sabathia looked ‘like Spring Training’, but the most important thing is his knee is fine.
This start starts the 30-day clock for Sabathia, which means he has to be activated by July 27th at the latest. Joe Girardi said he plans on having Tanaka make at least two more minor league starts to re-build pitch count, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Yankees giving him an extra start on top of that. The Yankees haven’t announced Sabathia’s next start but Double-A Trenton Thunder must know something everyone else doesn’t know–they’re promoting tickets for next Thursday, which actually lines up with Sabathia’s next start. We’ll see if it’s with Trenton, but for now it’s up in the air.
