Francisco Cervelli could return to Yankees tomorrow

If you’re going to watch tonight’s game on YES, take a good look at John Ryan Murphy because tomorrow, he might not be here.

Francisco Cervelli is eligible to come off the disabled list on Friday and unless the Yankees plan on designating either Alfonso Soriano or Kelly Johnson for assignment, the logical move would be for the Yankees to send down John Ryan Murphy. When Joe Girardi was asked, he didn’t give a clear cut answer and he might not give one until tomorrow.

“We’ll make an evaluation after tonight, see where he’s at,” Girardi said. “We feel that he’s pretty healthy (now) and that’s a great sign. It could be when we get back (that he’ll be activated). We’ll see where we are after tonight and evaluate it every day.”

Murphy hasn’t performed terribly, he’s batting .296 since taking over as Cervelli’s replacement, but Girardi also spoke about an opportunity for Murphy to play every single game, and that would be in Triple-A.

“I don’t think it ever hurts anyone to play every day, to develop,” Girardi said. “You get in a rhythm more and I think you can learn more about yourself physically sometimes if you’re playing and your career is to be an everyday catcher. I think that’s important to do, to learn how to handle fatigue and all those different types of things.”

Some Notes

CC Sabathia is in New York while the team is on the West Coast and he’s been playing catch on flat ground. It’s entirely possible for Sabathia to throw off a mound next week.

— Do you guys remember Jesus Montero, the guy the Yankees traded to Seattle for Michael Pineda? Well, he’s back with the Mariners and he’s officially been converted to a first basemen. He hasn’t caught a game in the minor leagues this season.

Carlos Beltran played catch again today and he’s making slow yet steady progress. He’ll take tomorrow off and will throw again on Saturday, although he won’t be ready to play right field anytime soon.

— One more thing: The Staten Island Yankees are slated to begin their season and Robert Pimpsner of Pinstriped Prospects wrote the Opening Series preview. Make sure to take a look and support the Baby Bombers!

One Response to Francisco Cervelli could return to Yankees tomorrow

  1. Robert Rufa says:

Girardi said they may send Murphy down so he can get more playing time. Well, the same applies to Cervelli. He needs to play more, whether it's catching or at first base.
