Injury Notes: Sabathia, Cervelli, Pineda

CC Sabathia 5

Here’s a few quick notes before tonight’s game. It’s nothing too elaborate considering it’s the only news of the evening, but just something to read before the game begins:

CC Sabathia:  Sabathia is progressing and he’s throwing but he’s not doing any bullpen sessions. He’ll throw one sometime next week, but Joe Girardi said it’s unlikely he’ll make a start before the All-Star Break.

Francisco Cervelli: Cervelli won’t be activated during this road trip, which means John Ryan Murphy will get to stay with the Yankees throughout the weekend. The Yankees were planning on using Brian McCann for all three games, so it didn’t make much sense to the Yankees to activate Cervelli just to have him sit on the bench.

Michael Pineda: Before the setback, Michael Pineda was slated to return sometime in July. However, since he hasn’t even played catch yet, the Yankees aren’t expecting Pineda to return until August. They’re trying to give Pineda’s back some time to heal, especially after his back didn’t heal correctly after the mandatory 10 days.

Just one more little note: Girardi said not to expect the rotation to change. That’s pretty much how the rotation will look going into the All-Star Break next month.

Not sure what to say about Sabathia. I think he's got to prove himself again, and until he does he shouldn't automatically be dropped back into the rotation unless Phelps or Nuno gives Girardi a reason to make a change. After the way Phelps pitched in his last game, he deserves a chance to see if he can repeat.

Nuno is giving Girardi plenty of reasons.
