Tanaka K’s 11 in 4-2 victory over Mariners

Masahiro Tanaka came into tonight’s match-up hoping to notch his 10th win of the season. He was two outs shy of pitching a shutout, but he did pitch a complete game, giving the Yankees a 4-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington.

Tanaka carried a shutout into the 9th inning but lost it on a two-run home run by former Yankee Robinson Cano. Overall, Tanaka pitched all nine innings, giving up just the two runs on six hits while notching 11 strikeouts. Tanaka reached the 100 strikeout plateau tonight and here’s an interesting tidbit: Tanaka is just the fifth pitcher in the Yankees organization since the year 1900 to have reached the 100 strikeout plateau in his first 13 starts of the season.

The Yankees were able to slightly get the offense rolling by scoring one run in the third on an RBI single by Jacoby Ellsbury and three in the sixth on a Mark Teixeira home run.
