Yankees fall to Royals 8-4

The Yankees needed to win this game–unfortunately David Phelps had his worst outing of the season as the Yankees fell to the Royals 8-4 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

There seemed to be hope for the Yankees in the sixth inning when they scored three runs on a Carlos Beltran RBI double and a two-run single by Yangervis Solarte to tie the game, but the Royals answered back with a four run bottom of the sixth, taking the lead for good. The Yankees scored another run in the ninth on an RBI groundout by Brian Roberts, plating Solarte.

David Phelps by far had his worst outing of the season, going 5.2 innings while giving up seven runs on 10 hits and striking out four. Matt Daley came in the game and gave up the eighth run, paving the way for Jose Ramirez to have a scoreless inning and a third.

Amazing. The Royals struggle to score runs for their pitchers but Phelps made them look good. They've got to find someone else.

    • Two starts ago, Phelps had a 3.38 ERA. He's young, prone to inconsistency, but everyone should expect him to stick around. The Yankees cannot afford to bump a young, healthy arm from the rotation that has already lost 3 pitchers.
