Bullpen implodes in 9-3 loss to Indians

David Phelps pitched well enough to get the win, handing the ball off to Matt Thornton. Unfortunately, Phelps’s lead and any chance of a Yankees win disintegrated when the bullpen imploded, sending the Yankees to a 9-3 loss against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Yankees scored early, getting two runs in the fourth inning on a Zelous Wheeler two-run shot. The Yankees added their third and final run on a Yangervis Solarte RBI single.

David Phelps gave the Yankees the start they envisioned, going into the sixth inning without giving up any runs but because he put two runners on before Matt Thornton took the mound, Phelps was charged with two runs on seven hits while striking out five. Thornton gave up two runs on two hits while retiring one batter and Jim Miller gave up five runs on six hits while striking out two.
