Brandon McCarthy‘s numbers while with the Arizona Diamondbacks aren’t pretty, and some Yankees fans seemed hesitant about the McCarthy trade just because of his 3-10 record and ERA over 5. Since becoming a Yankee, he’s pitched approximately 12 innings and gave up two earned runs, helping the Yankees plug in the hole that was recently occupied by Masahiro Tanaka. After yesterday’s start, McCarthy’s teammates were impressed with his pitches and Brian McCann believes McCarthy could be a top-of-the-rotation starter.
“He’s got top-of-the-rotation stuff,” McCann said. “We’re really glad to have him.
McCarthy credits his Yankees success to his cutter, a pitch the Arizona Diamondbacks were against him throwing. But McCann convinced McCarthy to bring back the cutter after their first meeting with the pitching coaches, allowing him to utilize the strike zone. He threw the sinker and four-seamer with both the Yankees and Diamondbacks, but the cutter was able to help him set-up at-bats to retire the hitters.
“The sinker was there and it could work, but it has to be kept alive,” McCarthy said. “The cutter today I thought set that up well.”
McCann has faith McCarthy could pitch well for the Yankees, especially after 80% of their rotation is on the disabled list. And who knows, maybe McCarthy’s work could earn him a contract with the Yankees next season. He’s done a great job so far.
