The Yankees have gotten some help with the rotation and it involved a trade to make a good start.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports,  the New York Yankees have traded Vidal Nuno to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Brandon McCarthy. Vidal Nuno was 2-5 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP this season with the Yankees while McCarthy is 3-10 with a 5.03 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP with the Diamondbacks.

The deal was most likely done because the Yankees are anticipating being without CC Sabathia for at least the entire season and Michael Pineda is nowhere near ready. McCarthy’s best season was in 2012 when he was with the Oakland Athletics: he was 8-6 with a 3.24 ERA. McCarthy’s first start would come against the Cleveland Indians if the Yankees stay on rotation.

Now it becomes clear why Billings is called up. He will take Nuno's spot because McCarthy pitched on July 3.

Joe Girardi said Billings won't start tomorrow. There is a possibility that Shane Greene is called up and could start tomorrow.

Just a guess on Monday's starter at Cleveland: Shane Greene, hasn't given up a run last 2 starts at AAA, last pitched July 2.

I guess this is Cashman's way of saying he's getting pitching help for his team, but on paper it looks like all we are swapping are: ERAS. Oakland really scored in the pitching department and we needed one of those 2 pitchers from the Cubs. As far as I'm concerned, Yankee fans should continue to blame the present ownership and especially Cashman for failing to deliver the goods for this years team. Cashman talks big but delivers no impact players to this club when they need them the most to help make a drive for the pennant. As I said at the beginning of the season, the proof is in the pudding. Check the present ERAS of the pitchers and the present statistics of the hitters and you will find out the big personnel problem the Yankees have this year.

I guess the Diamondback is slightly better (5 ERA v. 5.4 ERA), but also older and RH. Hmmmm?
