Bullpen ruins Pineda’s start in 5-3 loss against Orioles

Michael Pineda returned to the Yankees rotation for the first time since he was suspended in May and he picked up right where he left off. Unfortunately, the Yankees bullpen imploded, resulting in the Yankees dropping the series and the game in a 5-3 loss at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Yankees scored two of their runs in the 3rd inining on a Francisco Cervelli two-run shot. They scored their final run in the 9th on a Chase Headley ground out, scoring Mark Teixeira.

In Pineda’s first start since the beginning of the season, he gave up one run on five hits and struck out four. Dellin Betances gave up a run in 2.1 innings and Shawn Kelley pitched to two batters, giving up three runs on two hits.

What’s Next?

— It’s an off day for the Yankees tomorrow but they’re off to Tampa Bay on Friday to begin the first game of a three game set. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and the game will air on the YES Network.

Pineda threw only 67 pitches over 5 innings before he was removed from the game. What is the point to have him on the active roster if he isn't ready to handle 90 pitches.
