Masahiro Tanaka was at Yankee Stadium this morning throwing 25 pitches during his first catching session. This is one of the many steps Tanaka will take before he can be cleared to start throwing. So, how did Masahiro Tanaka feel?
“Good,” Tanaka said. “I thought it went all well.” Tanaka hopes to be a starter for the Yankees in September.
However, Joe Girardi isn’t as optimistic as Tanaka, stating to the media that Tanaka has a long way to go before he could actually join the rotation.
“It’s a positive day, but there’s still a long way to go,” Girardi said.
Once Tanaka throws off a mound, it will be the ultimate test to see if Tanaka’s UCL tear will hold up for the duration of the season.
— Brett Gardner was named the AL Player of the Week after batting .478 with 5 home runs and seven RBI’s.
“It’s been fun, and if he wants to do it this week, that’ll be great, too,” Girardi said.
— Joe Girardi needs a starter for Friday when the Cleveland Indians come to town. Could Michael Pineda, who recently threw his first rehab game on Sunday, be an option? Girardi didn’t say no, but he did say it was unlikely considering he’d like him to be built up to at least 90 pitches. Girardi added someone who’s already on the staff will take the start (my educated guess is Esmil Rogers).
