Michael Pineda is making his first rehab start with the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Rail Riders this afternoon. He’s slated to go approximately four innings or 60-65 pitches, whichever comes first. I’m watching Pineda’s start this afternoon, so you can follow along with this blog post as the afternoon and Pineda’s start goes on.
1:09 p.m.: Michael Pineda has retired his first batter of the game, and we’re underway.
1:18 p.m.: After issuing a walk and a single, Pineda retires his last two batters on back-to-back strikeouts to end the first.
1:34 p.m.: Pineda recorded two quick outs before giving up a double. The runner advanced to third on an error by Zoilo Almonte.
1:37 p.m.: Pineda gets out of a small jam in the second inning but his pitch count is already at 43 pitches. You’d have to wonder how much longer he’ll be in the game.
1:53 p.m.: Two strikeouts and a ground out end the third inning for Michael Pineda. He’ll most likely come out for the fourth but with his pitch count in the 50’s, it will be tough to see if he’ll finish the inning.
1:54 p.m.: There’s activity in the Scranton bullpen, so now I’m predicting Pineda might be done after three innings versus four.
2:07 p.m.: Michael Pineda is back to begin the fourth inning at 54 pitches. Scranton radio just said Pineda has been throwing in the low 90’s in the third inning. His velocity was actually lower when the game began, but the good news is his velocity is increasing as the game goes on.
2:09 p.m.: Dave Miley comes to the mound and Pineda is done. There’s a runner at third so his line can’t be completed but so far: 3.1 IP, 3 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 58 pitches.
2:17 p.m.: Michael Pineda’s line is complete: 3.1 IP, 0 R 3 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 58 pitches, 37 strikes, 21 balls.
