The Yankees have little control of where they are in the standings, all they can focus on at this point in the season is winning games against who they play. In order for the postseason puzzle to fall to place, they’re going to have to start scoreboard watching and only hope the other teams ahead of them in the Wild Card race lose.
“Obviously you’d prefer to be able to control your own destiny, but you can’t,” Joe Girardi said. “The bottom line is, whether you control it or not, you still have to win games. We have to play well, and that’s my concern.”
For now, the Yankees aren’t playing against a Wild Card team, but it could get to that point if they win their games against the Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers knock them out of first place in the AL Central.
“(The players) know that there’s games left to be played,” Girardi said. “Obviously Kansas City is in first place in their division, but this (series), you control it. You can bring them closer to you, which would help. Seattle we don’t have any control over, and Detroit we have no control over, but the guys are ready to go every day.”
— Masahiro Tanaka is still on track to throw a bullpen tomorrow.
— Martin Prado did some running and he took batting practice with the team.
“I’m doing everything normal,” Prado said.
“He’s better. He went out and ran today.” Girardi said. “He’s going to take BP today and maybe he’s a pinch hitter for me today, and hopefully a player tomorrow.”
— David Phelps came out okay from his bullpen session and is still on track to throw a sim game on Sunday.
