Notes Around The League: Martin, Heyward, Miller, Stanton

Lots of weird stuff is happening in the Major Leagues this afternoon and while most of it doesn’t affect the Yankees, it’s still news that’s heating up the Hot Stove.

Russell MartinThe Toronto Blue Jays have signed Russell Martin to a five-year, $82 Million contract. This affects the Yankees for one reason: they have to see Martin 19 games a season for the next five years when the Yankees and Blue Jays clash.

Jason Heyward & Shelby MillerThe Atlanta Braves and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed on a trade, sending Jason Heyward to the Cardinals and Shelby Miller to the Braves. The Cardinals needed a right fielder and the Braves needed arms, so in the end it was a good deal for the both of them.

Giancarlo StantonThe Miami Marlins and Giancarlo Stanton have reportedly agreed on a 13-year, $325 Million contract with an opt out clause after the fifth season.  Stanton’s contract will surpass Alex Rodriguez‘s contract as the largest contract in baseball history. It’s good the Marlins locked up one of their star players–maybe they feel with Stanton’s help they could potentially reach the postseason.

I wonder which Russell Martin the Jays will get, the one who hit .290 last year or the one who hit .235 over the previous five years. The Jays are going to regret that one.

    • Russell Martin has always had a respectable OBP and has hit for power while playing exceptional defense. His batting average fluctuates a bit, but overall he is a consistent player that plays elite defense.

Fluctuates a bit is a wonderful understatement. Do you believe he is worth a five year contract for 16 million a year, that runs through age 37? I can't imagine that his second best offer was anywhere near that.

I totally agree players have one good season and Plp go crazy then kick them selves years later….

I was surprised Martin got that kind of money but look at what the Yankees shelled out for McCann…I would prefer Martin over McCann…

There is no doubt the owners these days are overpaying for stars and saddling teams with PT former superstars (i.e. Yankees in 2015). I like Russel Martin, but the contract begins at age 32 and ends at age 37. Hmm….
