After weeks of Yoan Moncada‘s status being in limbo, Moncada is officially a Major League free agent and is available to sign with any team.
The Yankees had been linked to Moncada and are considered the “favorites” for him according to those that follow the international market.
Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports added Major League Baseball and the U.S. Government had to go through multiple steps in order to make Moncada a free agent. It involved a license, a change of U.S. policy and ended with MLB sending the memo Moncada was officially an MLB free agent:
Players who present sworn affidavits to Major League Baseball stating they are residents of another country, have no intention of returning to Cuba and are not Cuban government officials can sign with major league teams immediately, sources said. MLB distributed a memo to teams Tuesday afternoon outlining the changes.
With Moncada now a free agent, it would take a lot money to sign him. People close to the international market predict Moncada could land a contract worth approximately $80 Million.
