In the past, either the Yankees or the Mets had the big advantage going into the first round of the Subway Series. However, this year it’s a little different: The Mets are coming off an 11-game win streak and the Yankees just finished taking six out of their last seven against the Tampa Bay Rays and the Detroit Tigers. Both teams are hot at the moment and both teams are riding momentum. but tonight’s game will be a test of who can keep the momentum going.
“They’re sizzling hot,” Alex Rodriguez said following last night’s 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. “I don’t know if we’re playing that well. … It’s going to be awesome. The stadium should be rocking. Our fans are ready and their fans are ready, too. It’s fun for the players and even more fun for the fans.”
The battle for New York will be an interesting one: The Yankees are sending Michael Pineda, CC Sabathia and Nathan Eovaldi in this series and the Yankees will square off against the Mets ace and the media-proclaimed “Dark Knight”, Matt Harvey. Harvey is battling an ankle injury, but he wanted to make his start against the Yankees tomorrow, especially since he was a big Yankees fan growing up. The Yankees task of beating Harvey this weekend looms large, but Joe Girardi is confident the Yankees can get the ball rolling and continue riding their hot streak, especially after they played abysmal baseball to begin the season.
“Did we play bad? Yeah. I mean, we played very poorly, and I said that I think this team is much better than what we played.” Girardi said. “And (the team) came out on this road trip and showed that we can play baseball, and we can win different types of games. We won one-run games. We had a couple of big offensive explosions on certain days. So we won a lot of different types of games. But we weren’t too good the first week.”
