Trade Rumors: Cole Hamels reportedly traded to the Texas Rangers

Philadelphia Phillies Cole Hamels

Let’s add Cole Hamels to the list of pitchers who has different home despite being linked to the Yankees in trade rumors.

According to TR Sullivan of MLB.com, the Texas Rangers have acquired Cole Hamels from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for Jorge Alfaro, Alec Asher, Jerad Eickhoff and Nick Williams.

The Yankees were previously linked to Hamels, and even discussed a possible trade with the Phillies, but the Yankees quickly nixed the trade proposal when the Phillies wanted either Luis Severino or Aaron Judge. With Hamels off the board, the Yankees now turn their attention to David Price of the Detroit Tigers, who will reportedly be dealt before the July 31st trade deadline.

Tough spot for Cash. I appreciate that we are protecting our best prospects but if you look at the fact that this team has a very good chance to make the postseason AND that many of our competitor has significantly upgraded their teams, he's almost forced to make a move to keep up. Look at the top 3 teams in the AL by record, and who they have acquired.

Kansas City – Cueto, Zobrist (2 month rentals)
    Yankees – none
Houston – Kashmir (2 month rental)

Tough giving up a top-flight prospect for a rental. I do like how we match-up with San Diego. Tyson Ross (2 more years of control) and Craig Kimbrel (a dominant closer who's only 27) would be great additions to the team. Ross was an all-star last year – threw 195 innings, 195 strikeouts and a 2.81 ERA. Kimbrel in the 9th with Betances/Miller in the 7th/8th would be a huge advantage in the playoffs. Maybe Mateo (who the Padres wanted for Kimbrel) and Eovaldi get this done? I would rather give up Nova but trying to be realistic with what the Padres would accept. In Mateo, they have a future star at SS. And in Eovaldi, a hard thrower in a big stadium with 2 more years of control. Houston is very competitive in the going after Ross so if we want to make a move, we'll have to offer a good package.
