Trade Rumors: Craig Kimbrel comes up in Yankees talks with Padres

Despite having a loaded bullpen with Justin Wilson, Chasen Shreve, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller in the fold, it hasn’t stopped the Yankees from asking around the league for relief pitching.

One name that has popped up during talks was Craig Kimbrel, says Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. However, Heyman is unsure of how serious the talks are. The Yankees have vocally stated they’re not interested in trading Luis Severino, Greg Bird, Aaron Judge and Jorge Mateo in any deal, which could prevent Kimbrel from wearing pinstripes.

The Yankees have an excellent pen, but adding Kimbrel could give the Yankees a pen that they could ride to the World Series, which was what the Kansas City Royals did last year.

Kimbrel is 1-2 with a 2.75 ERA and a 1.119 WHIP in 39.1 innings with the San Diego Padres.

the Yankees have talked a lot…Papelbon just got traded to the Nats for a guy who is ranked as the Nats #11 prospect…Papelbon has an option year for $13 mil…Kimbrel 2 more years and a third option year totaled at $37 mil…Yankees could use a reliever but it would seem strange that they would pay up for a guy who would occasionally give Betances and Miller some relief and share time in the 7th with Shreve…lights out bullpen and insurance against injury but I'd rather see them add a starter with whatever prospects they might move in a Kimbrel trade…

I think a trade for a reliever is smart if Warren gets to start. However, why give top prospects for a RH bullpen arm? The reality is the Yankees just sent down Pinder (ERA sub 300), could call up Mitchell (ERA sub 300), have Warren (RH, dependable), and bullpen arms are not that rare. Now, adding Chapman from the NL would be cool!

i think they should have stuck with Mitchell but from what I've been reading, speculation was that the Yankees wanted to keep him stretched as a starter…so why isn't he starting tonight…

  3. scooter10 says:

Mitchell was in line to start tonight but fell and was pushed back a day. Next time they need a 6th starter, expect he will be the first choice.

    • hotdog says:

thanks…i like Capuano's character, he's a game but he should only be given the ball where he can do no damage…maybe this pushes Cashman further towards adding a 6th starter…i was surprised that Warren wasn't starting with the hope that he could go 5 and turn it over to the bullpen…too bad for Capuano, a good guy who gives it his all…

      • tom says:

Yeah, he fell on his head in the weight room. Ryan duo? Better not.

Warren should start tonight but he is a better asset to Girardi than Capuano therefore, Capuano took dirty job.

      • @ERIKHUSTLE says:

Time to release Capuano.. He's a gamer and was a big help to the Yanks in the past, he just doesn't fit into the NYY of 2015. He was signed as an insurance policy if a starter went down or Nova didn't return. We have Mitchell and Severino in a holding pattern.. Doesn't make ay sense???

  4. Terry says:

We have a number of arms that are piling up innings that we weren't sure they would get to healthy.Cutting back their workload is a must.A reliever or two would Definately help. However, Kimbrell would move into the closer role and that would push everyone else down a notch.I like it if the price is right prospect wise and we take on the salary.

  5. hotdog says:

Wow, did the 2nd inning really happen…WOW!

    • tom says:

Yeah… I was prepared for the worst outcome but I must be meaning for other team. LOL. Only Young hit home run (GS) and thats it. Kind of wish it happened in 1st not 2nd.

Moreno soaked up innings nicely. Too bad that Goody is not there to make a first MLB debut.

  6. greg says:

Yankees need a second basemen now.

  7. Balt Yank says:

Time for Capuano to stretch out at Triple A, Mitchell or Goody to come back to the bullpen.

  8. scooter10 says:

Doesn't seem to make sense to trade prospects for Kimbrel when they could have signed Robertson without giving anything up other than a 1st round draft pick in the off-season. With that said, if the prospect price comes down, the thought of having Miller/Betances/Kimbrel in the 8th/9th is compelling.
