Afternoon Notes: Beltran, Gardner, McCann, Rodriguez, Severino and Teixeira

Here’s a few quick afternoon notes as the Yankees prepare to take on the Boston Red Sox in the series finale of this three game set.

Brian McCann is out of the lineup for the second straight day with a MCL sprain he obtained during the seventh inning of Monday night’s ball game. Also to note, Joe Girardi has opted to also give Carlos Beltran the night off, just to keep Beltran fresh. Beltran and McCann are both available off the bench but McCann is strictly a pinch-hitting option.

— While Girardi was penciling in his lineup, Brett Gardner, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira were busy doing something else on the field other than playing baseball: they were bringing awareness to ALS. The three of them participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, a movement that swept the nation last year as participants had ice water dunked on their heads to bring awareness to Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or most commonly known as Lou Gehrig‘s disease. Teixiera then challenged the kids of the Harlem RBI club, who were visiting Yankee Stadium this morning, to participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge, which the kids agreed to do.

— The Yankees have confirmed Luis Severino will make his next start on Tuesday against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field. Severino made his Major League debut last night and gave up two runs (one earned) against the Boston Red Sox which resulted in a 2-1 loss.
