Yankees fall to Blue Jays 2-1

The Yankees and Blue Jays started both Nathan Eovaldi and R.A. Dickey, knowing it would be a battle of the starting pitchers. Soon, the Yankees and Blue Jays ended up having a battle of the bullpens. But in the end, the Yankees bullpen suffered a huge blip, which resulted in a 2-1 loss at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York.

The lone run for the Yankees came in the second inning on Mark Teixeira‘s 30th home run of the season.

Nathan Eovaldi started for the Yankees, giving up one run on five hits in 6.1 innings of work. Justin Wilson retired a batter, Dellin Betances pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, Andrew Miller pitched a scoreless inning and Branden Pinder gave up a run on a hit in his inning of work.

What’s Next?

— The Yankees return tomorrow afternoon with hopes of taking the second game of this three game series and they’ll do that by sending Ivan Nova to the mound. The Blue Jays will counter with David Price. First pitch will be at 1:05 p.m. and the game will air on the YES Network.

i have never been as irate as I was tonight. How does Pinder who is way ahead in the count give Bautista of all people a fastball down the middle. First of all Pinder had a good curve going and even if he goes with the fastball, it has to be a waste type of pitch, maybe to get Bautista to chase. This game was huge. Now the Yanks face Price. They'll liky lose 2 of 3 and maybe get swept. They needed this first game and to lose it could be devastating. Toronto is solid and don't let anyone fool you on their bullpen. It has been the best in baseball since the Allstar game.

  2. Otto says:

Wow. Relax Carl. Pinder is a rookie made a rookie mistake. The season is far from over. The Blue Jays will not catch the Yankees. Worst kinda fan always so negative and expects the worst.

    • Are you saying that just because Pinder didn't waste an 0-2 pitch that the Yankees won't automatically get swept? Because Karl is making some strong points.

      • Otto says:

No so what is they get swept they are still in first place. I do not think the Blue Jays will continue to play at this rate. I do not think they will catch the Yankees. Why waste a pitch? Just needed better location. That is a myth of wasting a pitch better location was required not wasting it. Wasting pitches is why pitchers only pitch 5 or 6 innings. What strong points did he make. He is in a full blown panic mode it is early August. Not getting timely hits was the reason for the loss.

  3. Michael R says:

BYB commentary says the pitch was a 1-2 hanging breaker. I didn't watch the game. So who's correct?

  4. Balt Yank says:

Rookies do make mistakes. Evoaldi is getting closer to pitching 7 innings. He needs to evolve that direction.

  5. Robert Rufa says:

Eovaldi pitched a decent game, as did Severino before him. NY's failure to produce critical runs at critical moments is ominous, and it wastes good pitching performances. The bats have to be consistent to have a chance at the post-season.

  6. Mike Sommer says:

One problem is that ellsbury and Gardner havhave stopped running. Start them, Joe.
