If the Yankees had any plans of using Chase Whitley for the bullpen next season, they’re out of luck. Simply because Whitley is no longer a New York Yankee.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports is reporting that the Tampa Bay Rays have claimed Whitley off waivers from the Yankees, ending Whitley’s tenure in the Bronx. Whitley was in a position to win a big league job last season, until he suffered a tear in his elbow and underwent Tommy John Surgery. Whitley only had one full season with the Yankees, going 4-3 with a 5.23 ERA in 75.2 innings in 2014. If Whitley had cleared waivers, he would have been an option for the Yankees bullpen going into next season.

because he's a fringe guy coming off Tommy John surgery who has about ten guys ahead of him on the depth chart.

He goes on the 60-day DL the day after the rule-5 draft which gives you flexibility in free agency while providing depth later in the season.

he looked good when he first came up but then faded…maybe elbow trouble but he could have found a position if it wasn't for TJS…he was never a top prospect though…a guy like Ian Clarkin had more upside before his elbow problems…i'm hearing that Clarkin pitched in the AFL so I would have to believe that they'll slowly nurse that elbow throughout the 2016 season…hopefully he won't need TJS…

He was on the 40 man roster. But like Celerino said, he's a fringe guy coming off TJS with a few guys ahead of him on the depth chart. Sucks to lose him, but he wasn't much more than a back of the bullpen arm.

claimed off waivers means they tried to outright him in order to remove him from the 40-man, probably to get a spot to protect somebody else from the rule 5 draft.
