All anyone has on the brain this weekend is Star Wars, especially with the new Star Wars movie currently in theaters. I’m a fan of the franchise and I haven’t seen the new movie as of yet, but I have been pondering about how some of the Yankees players remind me of the characters in the series. So which Star Wars characters would fit the current Yankees roster? And which former player would have fit the bill if they were playing for the team today?
Current Yankee: Brett Gardner
Reason: Gardner and Skywalker have a few things in common: they were written off early only to persevere and become heroes in their own right. Gardner became an unlikely hero for the Yankees and even went on to the 2015 All-Star Game. Plus he’s a homegrown. A former Yankee that could fit the bill of Skywalker is shortstop Derek Jeter.
Current Yankee: Alex Rodriguez
Reason: Alex Rodriguez has been the one thing Han Solo has always been–loyal. And even through thick and thin, Rodriguez has been loyal to the Yankees, even if the Yankees publicly gave him a hard time during Rodriguez’s suspension. A former Yankee that could fit the bill of Han Solo might be Jorge Posada, as he was loyal to the Yankees despite how things transpired during his final season.
Current Yankee: Dellin Betances
Reason: The hero of the Yankees bullpen is Andrew Miller, but the sidekick plays an important role as well. Chewbacca is the sidekick who’s his own hero in Star Wars. Dellin Betances is the sidekick who’s his own hero in the Yankees bullpen. A former Yankee that could fit as Chewbacca was David Robertson, who was a sidekick to closer Mariano Rivera before he signed a deal with the Chicago White Sox.
Current Yankee: Brian McCann
Reason: Obi-Wan Kenob is a side hero who has a vast amount of knowledge. Brian McCann has a vast amount of knowledge when it comes to the catching position, and it makes him the perfect teacher to young back-up catchers like Gary Sanchez and Austin Romine. A former Yankee that could fit as Obi-Wan Kenobi is Mariano Rivera, when he mentored the young bullpen arms during his time as the Yankees closer.
Current Yankee: None
Former Yankee: Yogi Berra
Reason: Yoda and Yogi were old and wise. Not to mention they had their own unique talk which made them special. It’s pretty self explanatory.
Current Yankee: None
Former Yankee: Alex Rodriguez (pre-2015)
Reason: Many Yankees fans love Alex Rodriguez because of his loyalty to the team, hence why I labeled him as Han Solo. But before 2015, Rodriguez was baseball’s biggest villain, and that left him in the role as Darth Vader. Nowadays there really isn’t a Darth Vader on the roster, especially since Rodriguez cleaned up his act.
