Dustin Ackley was forced to leave yesterday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays when he popped his shoulder during a pickoff attempt. And while the Yankees traveled to Toronto, Ackley stayed behind in Tampa to undergo an MRI. The Yankees are slated to get Ackley’s MRI results prior to tonight’s game, but if Ackley has to go on the DL, who would replace him on the roster?
We all know the primary first baseman is Mark Teixeira and Teixeira had been battling some injuries himself. But he was forced into action in the 7th inning after Ackley came out of the game. The Yankees have also said Chase Headley and Austin Romine could play first, but only in emergencies, meaning the Yankees would need a legitimate first base option. Judging by what’s in Scranton, here’s a few options the Yankees could call up.
Nick Swisher: Swisher would seem like the logical choice should the Yankees call up a back-up first baseman. And while his numbers in Triple-A have tailed off (.244/.263/.366, 4 HR, 13 RBI), he would only necessarily be a back-up. Plus, his primary position is first base, especially since scouts say he’s no longer able to play the outfield due to his knees.
Rob Refsnyder: Refsnyder has performed much better than Swisher offensively while in Scranton (.294/.340/.404, 2 HR, 10 RBI), but the one thing that could work against him is Refsnyder isn’t a first baseman. And while the Yankees could use Romine or Headley as a first base option and bring up Refsynder for his bat, the Yankees would probably prefer to have Romine as a back-up to Yankees catcher Brian McCann should McCann get hurt, not to mention third base is Headley’s primary position. While having Refsnyder’s bat would help the offense, the Yankees most likely wouldn’t sacrifice defense for offense.
Chris Parmelee: Average wise, Parmelee is there with Swisher, but he has a higher OBP and SLG% (.246/.333/.435, 6 HR, 19 RBI). What also helps Parmelee’s case is he’s a first baseman and a right fielder, which means he could give Texeira and Carlos Beltran a chance to get a day off. If the Yankees opt not to bring up Swisher and Refsnyder, Paremelee could be their guy.
