In wake of Ellsbury & Castro injury, Yankees add Solano, Swarzak to roster 7

With the injuries to Jacoby Ellsbury and Starlin Castro, the Yankees felt they needed to bolster their roster, and the team did that by adding another pitcher and an infielder.

Prior to tonight’s game against the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees called up INF Donovan Solano and reinstated Anthony Swarzak from the 15-day DL. To make room for Solano on the 40-man roster, the Yankees moved Chad Green to the 60-day DL.

The addition to Solano indicates Castro is done for the year after injuring his hamstring during yesterday’s game.

In Ellsbury’s case, the Yankees believe he will only be out for a couple of days.

Solano's had a decent year and was likely done with his Yankees career after the September 20th AAA game so I guess it's nice to see him get a shot. I was kind of hoping they'd give Torreyes some regular AB's at second to finish the season. Refsnyder could easily fill in at second freeing Torreyes for SS or 3B. Cesar Puello would be a more interesting choice than Solano. If Puello hits like he did in AAA, maybe he's worth a 40-man roster spot after all. Hard to see the Yankees sticking with both Hicks and Puello though so that move would really point towards Hicks getting DFA'd to start 2017.

Both Solano and Swarzak are garbage time fill-ins here as priorities shift towards not injuring your regulars for next season first and foremost.

RF isn't securely locked next year so Refsnyder may get more play time at RF as Castro obviously remains as 2B next season. Puello has no power to beat out Hicks.

I can see Yankees expose Puello to R5D. Solano will likely be expendable after this season.

What Yankees did in September offer no future consideration at all.

Why swarzak. He blew way too many games and solano shouldn't even be up because I want to see Ronald or rob getting more playing time

These moves do not block other players being added to the 40-man. If you add say Jordan Montgomery instead of Swarzak, you would have to pass him through waivers to take him back off the 40-man for 2017 (he wouldn't clear). If you use Swarzak here in the end of 2017 you can keep Montgomery and use that 40-man roster on somebody else so they won't be exposed to the rule-5 draft. That means the rest of the year the Yankees have to avoid guys they do not want to add to their 40-man this offseason so you get guys who they will release basically. Swarzak and Solano. Peullo's another one.
