Michael Pineda racks up five strikeouts in 11-1 win over Tigers

Yankees @ Tigers
FINAL: Yankees 11, Tigers 1
WIN: Michael Pineda (1-0, 0.00 ERA)
LOSS: Anibal Sanchez (0-1, 23.63 ERA)

Michael Pineda made his Spring debut for the Yankees in Lakeland, and while he wasn’t one of the pitchers fighting for a rotation spot, he surely had something to prove. Pineda ended up racking five strikeouts and the kids unleashed their bats in a 11-1 rout over the Detroit Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida.

The Yankees got on the board in the top of the third on a two-run home run by Gary Sanchez followed by a double by Starlin Castro. In the fourth, Aaron Hicks hit a home run, in the fifth Rob Refsnyder walked in a run, Sanchez walked in a run and Donovan Solano hit a two-run single. And in sixth Rashad Crawford hit a two-run single.

Pineda went two innings, giving up no runs while striking out five batters. Dellin Betances pitched a scoreless inning, Chad Green gave up a run in 1.2 innings, Ben Heller pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, Jonathan Holder pitched a scoreless inning, Chasen Shreve pitched a scoreless frame and Giovanny Gallegos pitched a scoreless inning.

What’s Next?

— The Yankees head back to Tampa where they’ll take on the Pittsburgh Pirates. Masahiro Tanaka will start for the Yankees and Jameson Taillon will start for the Pirates. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m. and the game will air on the YES Network.

Missed this game but read about the strike outs. What really impressed me was getting Miggy, JD, and J-Up in a row. ST or in a rocking chair later, those are three big time hitters. Nice job. It makes me really look forward to his next start. Can he keep progressing, hopefully. As far as Gary, he's unbelievable!! Bat, glove, arm…….too early to say any MVP stuff?? Yea I know, but that's how good he is now and scary to think where he can go.Gary, Bird, Judge, oh yea. Love ST

As for Pineda, that's why the Yankees refuse to give up on him. He can put together some impressive starts. This year is most likely his last chance, I mean what if he puts together a year that looks like this 15 and 8 , ERA 3. 20 200 plus K's and 40 walks in 200 innings. Impending free agent who finally finds his focus. Again, I know this is a big IF, but this is the type of year we always envisioned.

he had tons of games last year with a great line through 2, 3 4 innings. But he ends up with an ERA near 5. When he goes 14-10 with an ERA of 4.00 I''ll be excited

Fools Gold! The biggest tease in baseball is at it again.
