After Monday’s Opening Day loss against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Yankees sent CC Sabathia to the mound in his first start of the 2017 season, with hopes he’d stop the bleeding. With help from the Yankees offense, the Yankees were able to forget their abysmal Opener and defeated the Rays 5-0 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The Yankees got on the board in the third inning on a two-run homer by Ronald Torreyes and a RBI double by Matt Holliday. In the sixth, Chase Headley added a run by hitting a solo-shot, and in the eighth Headley notched a RBI single.
Sabathia went five innings and gave up no runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Bryan Mitchell pitched a scoreless sixth, Tyler Clippard pitched a scoreless seventh, Jonathan Holder retired a batter, Dellin Betances retired two batters, and Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth.
— The Yankees return tomorrow for the series finale against the Rays as they hope to take their first series of the 2017 campaign. Michael Pineda will start for the Yankees and Alex Cobb will start for the Rays. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and the game will air on FOX Sports 1.
