Tanaka struggles as Yankees fall to Rays 7-3 on Opening Day 4

Yankees @ Rays
FINAL: Rays 7, Yankees 3
WIN: Chris Archer (1-0, 2.57 ERA)
LOSS: Masahiro Tanaka (0-1, 23.63 ERA)

It was Opening Day for Masahiro Tanaka and the New York Yankees, as they aimed to get the 2017 season off on the right foot against their AL East rivals the Tampa Bay Rays. Unfortunately, Tanaka struggled in his third career Opening Day, which resulted in the Yankees losing 7-3 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The Yankees scored two runs in the second inning on a RBI double by Aaron Judge, and a RBI groundout by Ronald Torreyes. They added another run in the ninth on a SAC Fly by Chris Carter.

Tanaka went 2.2 innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits while notching three strikeouts. Tommy Layne pitched a scoreless inning, Adam Warren pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, Jonathan Holder pitched a scoreless inning, and Chasen Shreve pitched a scoreless inning.

What’s Next?

— The Yankees are off on Monday, but they’ll return to game action on Tuesday as they look for their first win of the season. CC Sabathia will start for the Yankees and Jake Odorizzi will start for the Rays. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. and the game will air on the YES Network.

Reasons for a loss. Tanaka 2.2 innings allowed 7 runs on 8 hits. First 5 YANKEE batters are 0 for 20. You can call the first game of the season UGLY.

Actually the box score shows surprisingly Gardner had a hit. But I get your drift. Very ugly!!

i said last week why is tanaka pitching on 4 days rest?? big mistake by gerardi to pitch him last tuesday-stupid stupid stupid-but a bad start by this team is perfect-trade gardy, headley cc and pineda for more prospects and not do the opposite and trade prosepects for quintana. Keep losing yanks! this way no doubt what to do at the deadline

It is hard to understand why Tanaka pitched that last ST start. Maybe in the "name of keeping him fresh" have him pitch 1 inning. However, very good pitchers don't need that and Tanaka in particular doesn't need a lot of 2017 ST due to his arm and also performance. Very dumb.
